Something Good: Public Art

These are hard times, so I’m very excited to have something good to share.

During these weeks of quarantine I’ve seen more people walking around our neighborhood than ever before. We tend to spend a lot of time outside when the weather is nice and it’s been fun getting to know more neighbors and just seeing people live like the 90s.

I’ve always been a fan of Free Little Libraries and we have a couple in our neighborhood. But with COVID and public health being a big concern, I didn’t think it was the right fit for our house.

Instead, I decided to display public art. It’s common in urban areas to have public art but not in the suburbs. The Detroit Institute of Arts has an Inside Out program where it displays prints in public areas around metro Detroit and since the museum is closed for now, I thought it would be a nice tribute to display a piece for passersby.

Danny recently told Lucas about four leaf clovers and now a good portion of our family walks are dedicated to scouting for them in the grass. When I came across Winslow Homer’s Four Leaf Clover piece in the DIA’s online collection I knew it was perfect.

My hero and husband spent the afternoon digging and building to make my dream a reality and I couldn’t love him more for it.

With so much sadness and stress in the world, I hope this bring a little joy to others and perhaps inspires them to do something similar. It brings lots of joy to me (if only because Danny really made it a great gift).

My plan is to switch out the art every couple months to keep it fresh and relevant to the season – stay tuned
