One thing I’m looking forward to most in 2015 is growing professionally. I loved my old job for the people but I wasn’t challenged by the work. As I prepared to changed jobs, I discovered I needed to find a position that would allow me to grow and development my skills. A starting point in that journey has been my involvement with Inforum, a professional organization that represents women throughout Michigan.
A friend from MEP suggested I join in 2013. At the time I didn’t want to spend the money and I didn’t feel confident in my career objectives to get involved in a professional organization. When my job hunt continued to go no where and I realized I wanted to do more than answer phones, I decided to take the plunge and joined this past summer. It was a great decision.
This new role will be great for my professional development but I also hope it will be a platform for a #She4She campaign. As previously noted, I don’t have the best track record with feminism and I feel like I have catching up to do. Women make amazing contributions to society but too often we start further down the ladder than our male counterparts. Inforum is made up of a collection experienced female leaders from various industries. I’ve learned a lot by talking with them and I want to see other women my age benefit from the connections as well. For that reason, I plan to spend time reaching out to college students and young professionals to let them know about the great resources available through Inforum.
There is an annual membership fee and major events have additional costs; however, the benefits are worth it because you get a support system of women who are sincerely interested in helping you succeed. If there is a company/industry you’re interested in or you need help framing a cover letter/resume to fit the job you’re looking for or you want a mentor to help you grow in your career, there is undoubtedly someone at Inforum you can connect with. Every time I’ve reached out to a member with a question or request I have been warmly received. As a person who feels painfully awkward 98% of the time, it’s nice to feel welcomed and that there is a place for me in the organization.
Admittedly, I don’t think the website does the organization justice but I think this video does a great job explaining Inforum’s mission. If it’s something that interests you and you have questions send me an email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Or come check it out, you can drop in on a Women on The Move meeting as a guest. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m.
