This week I got a sneak preview of the Detroit Design 139 exhibit that opens to the public today at 1001 Woodward. The three week exhibit showcases the development projects underway in Detroit and it’s incredible! I’m in awe of the plans for downtown/Midtown and even more impressed for the plans for the neighborhoods.
The mayor’s office is making a serious commitment to expanding the investment dollars in Detroit beyond the 7.2 mile Renaissance Zone and the plans and possibilities are incredible. The exciting thing about the exhibit is that the projects aren’t hypothetical, they are funded with groundbreaking dates. Two neighborhoods I haven’t spent much time in but am anxious to check out are Old Redford and Fitzgerald. There are MASSIVE plans for both areas that could be transformative. The attention to green-space and creating pathways (literally) for residents to connect with prominent community parks, including the Detroit Riverfront is also really exciting.
I highly recommend checking out the exhibit (it’s open daily and it’s free!). I plan to make frequent trips simply to be inspired. I can’t imagine what Detroit will look like in the coming years.
