Detroit’s having a hard time right now. The reality of a 60 year decline finally hit home. Bankruptcy is never good but I hope Detroit comes out better for it. In the meantime, I hope and pray the pensioners aren’t penalized too badly and the DIA, Belle Isle and other city assets remain intact.
Thankfully, not all is doom and gloom in the D. In fact, some really exciting things are in the works:
- The under utilized Riverfront may finally be developed. The area already has popular outdoor space, a great restaurant and a State sponsored adventure discovery center.
- Detroit’s medieval castle (aka the G.A.R. Building) is being renovated to fortify the otherwise bleak area of downtown Detroit. An added bonus is that DTE plans to develop a “mini Campus Mauritius” close by.
- Some of the gaps in Midtown’s landscape will be filled with the Woodward Garden project that includes a theater and apartments.
- Dan Gilbert is continuing his land grab and plans to save Detroit and Wayne County from itself and national ridicule by purchasing the courthouse, juvenile detention center and jail in order to expand Greektown’s entertainment complex. Yes PLEASE!
Besides what is set to come to Detroit still has some pretty neat things. A couple of weeks ago we took some of Danny’s family on a little tour of Detroit and they were quite impressed. And who wouldn’t be with a beach on Campus Martius and Shinola in Midtown.
